Renowned director Ahn Pan Seok, who helped shape Korean dramas with his realistic direction and deeply nuanced portrayals of characters, has died after a battle with illness. He was 65. According to an exclusive report by Sports Chosun on August 12, Ahn passed away that afternoon. He had reportedly been undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with lung cancer last year, and later suffered a brain hemorrhage. The news of his death is particularly heartbreaking as Ahn had been scheduled to return to television this October with the upcoming drama 'Love Doctor,' starring Choo Young Woo and Kim So Hyun. The funeral hall for the late director is expected to be set up at Seoul National University Hospital Funeral Hall in Hyehwa-dong, Seoul.

Director Ahn joined MBC in 1987 and made his directorial debut in 1994 with MBC's 'Best Theater: Greeting of Love.' He went on to establish his own distinctive style through works including 'Behind the White Tower,' 'Secret Affair,' 'Heard It Through the Grapevine,' 'Something in the Rain,' 'One Spring Night,' 'The Midnight Romance in Hagwon,' and 'The Art of Negotiation.' His works shared a common characteristic: rather than relying on flashy incidents or provocative premises, he closely examined characters' emotions, relationships, and conflicts rooted in everyday life.

He was particularly praised for creating what could be described as "slice-of-life dramas," using natural dialogue that sounded like real conversations, long-form scenes, and subtle performances that captured everything from actors' facial expressions to their silences. Among his most influential works, 'Behind the White Tower,' which aired on MBC in 2007, is widely regarded as the drama that firmly established Ahn's name in the Korean drama industry.

'Behind the White Tower' is a medical drama set at a university hospital, following surgeon Jang Joon Hyuk as he enters a fierce battle for power and competition within the hospital in his pursuit of reaching the top. The drama went beyond simply depicting surgical procedures or the lives of doctors. Through conflicts over skill, power, and prestige within the hospital, competition among medical professionals, and legal battles surrounding medical malpractice, it explored how people behave within an organization. Jang Joon Hyuk, played by Kim Myung Min, was a character who possessed both exceptional ability and ambition. When the UHD remastered version aired in 2018, it recorded ratings in the 4% range from its premiere and attracted attention comparable to that of a new drama, despite originally airing 11 years earlier. At the time, MBC also described 'The White Tower' as a masterpiece that continues to be remembered. Ahn explained that he had focused on creating a "story that feels real" with the drama. Rather than simply making the world of doctors appear convincing on the surface, he wanted to portray the desires and contradictions of the people actually living within it. Ahn continued to explore a variety of genres throughout his career. In 2018's 'Something in the Rain,' starring Son Ye Jin and Jung Hae In, he portrayed the romance between two ordinary working adults while realistically depicting the changes within their relationship.
