"Less than a Lover" is an alternative pop track featuring lo-fi guitar and vintage electric keyboard sounds. Jennie participated in writing and composing the song, which explores the feelings of a relationship between friendship and romance.
On July 30, the song reached number one on the Bugs real-time chart and Apple Music's "Today's TOP 100: Korea" chart. It also topped YouTube's trending videos in South Korea.
Internationally, "Less than a Lover" ranked high on Apple Music's top song charts in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos. On Spotify's daily charts, it placed prominently in South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and other regions. The single also claimed the number one spot on iTunes' top song charts in 27 countries including Vietnam, Chile, Indonesia, and Peru, setting a record this year for the most chart-topping solo K-pop song.
The music video ranked first on YouTube Music Video Trending Worldwide and topped video trending charts in both South Korea and the United States.
