Former NCT member Mark apologizes again over Confederate flag controversy

Former NCT member Mark has issued another apology over controversy surrounding an outfit featuring the Confederate flag, acknowledging that he previously did not fully understand the symbol’s history and meaning.

On August 21 KST, Mark addressed the issue through his social media account.

“It was wrong of me to say during the live broadcast that I understood the meaning and historical significance of the symbol,” Mark wrote. “At the time, I did not accurately understand its meaning or historical context.”

He continued, “I did not know what the symbol represented, and there is no excuse for that. I take full responsibility for my ignorance, and I sincerely apologize to the Black fans who were hurt by my actions.”

Mark added that he would continue educating himself and strive to act with greater respect and inclusivity moving forward.

The controversy initially arose in June after Mark shared a photo of himself wearing a shirt featuring the Confederate flag. The flag is associated with the Confederate States during the American Civil War and has long been widely viewed as a symbol connected to slavery and racism in the United States.

The post was subsequently deleted, and an apology was also issued following the backlash.

Meanwhile, Mark ended his exclusive contract with SM Entertainment and departed from all NCT activities in April. He has since established his own agency, Upper Room, and is continuing his career as an independent artist.
